According to a study, drinking alcohol during pregnancy can change the structure of the fetal brain

timesofummah.com – According to a study, drinking alcohol during pregnancy can change the structure of the fetal brain. Pregnancy is a period that some people have been waiting for. Various ways are done so that the fetus remains safe and healthy. However, there are a small number of women who are determined to drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.

Based on the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 2011 to 2013, as many as 10.2 percent of pregnant women aged 18–44 years in the United States admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages. In Canada the number is less, namely 6.7 percent, citing UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Is it true that drinking alcoholic beverages during pregnancy can change the structure of the fetal brain? Here’s an explanation!

1. Involved 24 fetuses undergoing brain MRI

The new study, presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, involved 24 fetuses who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. The MRI was performed between the 22nd and 36th week. From this research, it is known that:

  • Three pregnant women consumed 1–3 alcoholic drinks per week.
  • Two pregnant women consume 4–6 alcoholic drinks per week.
  • One pregnant woman consumes 14 alcoholic drinks per week.
  • Six pregnant women had binge drinking, at least once.

2. Exposure to alcohol has been shown to affect the brain and nerves of the fetus

Still referring to the same research, alcohol exposure to the fetus affects the right superior temporal sulcus. This is the part of the brain that plays a role in social cognition, audiovisual integration, and language perception and development.

Researchers say that cognitive and behavioral difficulties can continue into childhood! Because it is proven to affect the brain and nerves of the fetus, it is advisable to avoid alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.

3. In fact, it can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders

Reported by Healthline, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are a series of disorders caused by exposure to alcohol before birth. Alcoholic beverages consumed by pregnant women will enter their blood system, then be passed on to the fetus through the umbilical cord.

Alcoholic beverages are more dangerous if consumed during the first trimester when the organs are forming and developing. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders can cause babies to be born with low birth weight, have intellectual disabilities, have speech delays, have difficulty focusing attention, tend to be shorter than children their age, and many more.
