1. Involved 21 participants aged between 21 and 59 years

For the study, researchers followed 14 women and 7 men aged between 21 and 59 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.5–45.5 kg/m2 over an 8-week period. This 8-week workout includes 1 hour of aerobic exercise, 3 times a week.

The exercise intensity of the participants is based on individual fitness. They used MRI to measure insulin sensitivity in the brain before and after resistance training.

This method is also combined with intranasal administration of insulin, before and after the intervention.

2. Exercise increases insulin sensitivity in the brain

Excess abdominal fat (visceral adipose tissue) is one of the main risk factors for insulin resistance.

At the end of the study, the researchers found that the exercise program restored insulin activity in the part of the brain linked to hunger and satiety.

It is reported that the exercise returns hunger to the same level as someone who has a healthy BMI. In addition, increased insulin sensitivity in the brain improves metabolism, reduces hunger and reduces belly fat.

3. The relationship between exercise and insulin resistance

Endurance training, as performed in this study, is effective for improving insulin resistance. Various studies have shown that 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week for 8 weeks has an impact on improving insulin sensitivity.

Additionally, a combination of aerobic and resistance training can result in an even greater increase in sensitivity. With better sensitivity, the responsiveness of cells in absorbing sugar in the blood will also be better.

Resistance training is also good for keeping the heart rate up which has an impact on a better metabolism.

Research has proven that 8 weeks of exercise can increase insulin sensitivity in the brain. This can increase metabolism, reduce hunger, and reduce belly fat.
