Giving Gadgets Can Cause Children to Have Difficulty Managing Emotions

timesofummah.com – Giving Gadgets Can Cause Children to Have Difficulty Managing Emotions. Dealing with a child who is crying or having a tantrum can be a challenge that must be faced by parents. Nowadays, many parents deal with this problem by giving their children smartphones or tablets.

As it turns out, a new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics suggests that comforting children with digital devices can lead to problems with emotional reactivity later in life.

So, what alternative ways can be done to calm the child? Check out the explanation below.

1. Involved 422 parents and 422 children

This study involved 422 parents and 422 children. Participants in this study included English-speaking parents whose children were at a developing age, namely 3 to 5 years.

The study ran from August 2018 to January 2022. The researchers assessed how likely parents were to use digital devices to distract their children. They also look at how digital devices influence children’s behavior.

2. Digital devices limit children’s healthy emotional management

The study shows that using digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, is not an effective way in the long term. This method is considered to eliminate the opportunity for parents to teach children about managing difficult emotions.

Giving children digital devices can also form the idea that displaying a strong emotion, such as crying, is an effective way to get what they want.

In the long term, this will affect children’s ability to manage their emotions in a healthy manner.

This study is in line with the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), which states that children aged 2 to 5 years must have very limited screen time.

3. Alternative ways you can do

The lead author of the study, Dr. Jenny Radesky, recommends using tantrums as moments to teach children how to identify and respond to emotions in beneficial ways.

Instead of providing digital devices to distract their feelings, parents can provide a safe and comfortable place for children to process their feelings. These can be beanbags, blankets or tents.

The message that must be conveyed is that there is nothing wrong with having big emotions. They just need to manage and reset their emotions. In this way, children will have skills in controlling their feelings.

Studies show that diverting children’s emotions by giving digital devices can have a negative impact later in life. Parents can provide a safe space for children so they can manage their emotions effectively.
